This is going to be really self-indulgent and snobby but carrying on my from my previous post I really need to vent about some people in my radio journalism class/all my friggen journalism classes. Yeah, it’s a second year subject and I’m a third year but I wasn’t this fucking naive last year. Or probably 4 years ago even.

Sample quotes from some people when discussing commericial, public and community radio in my tute the other day

“Do I exclusively listen to commercial radio? What does exclusively mean?”

“Oh I thought Triple J was a commercial station!”

“Yeah Triple J is really good because the announcers just play good music and none of that nova shit”

“Nova just gets all their music from Triple J anyway”

“Nova announcers are really funny”

“I don’t think Triple J playlist their music it’s just random and the presenters can choose whatever”

“What’s Triple R?”

Ok I get it. Not everyone is the music interested media nerd that I am. But really guys? You’ve been at uni for at least 1.5 years studying JOURNALISM and you don’t even know at least some of these things. Do you even know who owns The Age and who owns the Herald Sun? Have you even listened to the radio in the past 5 years?

Don’t get me started on my group member who thought it would be a breaking hard news story to write about how “Melbourne Public Transport is Very Bad” and for them to interview their friend who sometimes catches the train, still think the premier of Victoria is Steve Bracks and to just make up quotes (with spelling mistakes) from the minister of transport.

Yes there are several very with it and smart students amongst the rabble who hopefully get jobs. Perhaps more that just mostly keep quiet but it’s mind boggling the amount of stupidity that makes it to a tertiary level. This is Monash. It’s supposed to be a fairly decent university I believe.

When you hear people say Arts Degrees are useless it kind of makes sense when you see the quality of so many of the students. Hopefully the together kids can do something useful with their degrees and be exceptions to the rule.
